Our dog doesn’t so much have a big barking issue, but a whining issue. If my 8-year-old isn’t with her she cries. She could go to the bathroom and if she’s not in there with her she cries. If she’s put in the room for even 5 minutes without my daughter, it sounds like she’s be tortured with the crying and barking! This shock collar has really helped with that. I love her barking when someone comes through the door, but the whining excessively needed to change. I have the collar on a low setting for her so rather than her feeling any pain from the shock it just makes her turn her head and itch as if a bug were on her. She doesn’t cry in pain or show any signs of being in pain – which I like. We certainly don’t want to hurt her, just train her. The collar seems to be working great for what we intended to use it for and will continue to use it as necessary.
In general, a no-bark dog collar is able to detect barking by sensing vibrations in the dog’s vocal chords. When this occurs, the collar provides a stimulus to the dog, warning him that this is the consequence for barking. No-bark collars fit snugly against your dog’s neck when they are fitted correctly. It is increasingly important both for safety and for proper training that this collar is fitted by a professional or by an experienced dog owner.
The nylon collar it comes with fits similarly to a regular nylon dog collar. At the front of the bark collars, there is a mechanism which releases the deterrent, this mechanism fits against your dogs throat so that the static shock and vibrations caused by nuisance barking can trigger the mechanism. With the static shock dog collar, such as this one, the mechanism that sits against the dog’s throat sends out a static shock that travels down two metal prongs that touch your dog’s neck. The static shock in some of these collars begins with a rather small shock which increases in intensity up through a variety of levels as your dog continues his or her nuisance barking. You can personally test the static shock bark collar on your hand prior to using it on your dog if you are worried about the intensity of the shock your dog will receive.
I really like that this set also comes with a dog training whistle and book to guide you on training your dog, not just throwing on a collar and hoping for the best. It`s rather informational and helpful for that purpose.
While industry claims that no harm is done to the dog, obviously the stimulus, or sensation, provided by the no-bark collar is not something the dog likes. If it didn’t hurt them, they wouldn’t worry about barking freely despite the consequences. That being said, we don’t know of any severe injuries or deaths caused by no-bark collars, and if the dog learns not to bark, it won’t be shocked anymore. We can’t help but wonder how this is restraining some of dogs’ natural functions, however, or causing undue stress and anxiety.
Furthermore, consider the fact that in Europe, electric shock no-bark collars are illegal. Some studies suggest that the electric current from the shock collars for dogs results in aggression, stress or persistent anxiety. How severe the effects of the no-bark dog collar actually depend on the trainer and the environment in which the collar is used. Matthijs B.H. Schilder and Joanne A.M. van der Borg studied behavioral effects of electric shock collars and came to the conclusion that shocked dogs showed more stress-related behavior than the control dogs — dogs controlled via human discipline instead of no-bark collars — the shocked dogs connected their handlers with getting shocks, and may even connect orders given by their handlers with getting shocked. What does this mean? Schilder and Borg conclude that, while they have not proven that the long-term welfare of the shocked dogs is affected, it is clearly under serious threat.
There are dogs in over 78 million households in the U.S. alone. The unconditional love and affection that dogs display, the companionship they provide, and the fun activities they can participate in are just a few of the reasons they have earned the title of Man` Best Friend. However, the best dog owners are those who show their canine friend tough love and dedicate themselves to training them quickly and efficiently. For many owners, shock collars are the means to this end. Dog owners should understand the three main types of shock collars and match the right type to their dog and their environment. In addition, dog owners should follow a few guidelines in order to purchase the right device and use it appropriately. For instance, owners should use the beep and tone mode initially and only shock their pet when absolutely necessary. Also, dog owners should explore other training options as well and use them in conjunction with the shock collar to condition their pet`s behavior. Dog owners should never purchase a collar prior to purchasing a dog and also avoid attaching the collar to a leash to prevent damage and injury. Owners who follow these guidelines can use collars effectively and keep their best friend out of harms way.
It’s always important to consider the alternatives to no-bark collars, such as traditional disciplinary measures, or other means which avoid inflicting physical or emotional pain or stress on the dog. If it’s possible, it’s best to discipline dogs in this way rather than to cause any unnecessary suffering by using a no-bark dog collar.
