Homemade Doughnuts

This post first appeared on Piping Rock. All content is theirs.

Let's be real. Doughnuts are tasty, fluffy, magnificent things. Yet, as good as they taste, they aren't that healthy. Enter today's Homemade Doughnut recipe.

We'll be honest, this recipe is not the traditional doughy doughnut. It doesn't need to be baked, and it doesn't need any flour or eggs. These can be made simply with a food processor and all-natural ingredients. They are raw, Homemade Doughnuts. In our opinion? Massively good.

Let's go over what's inside these treats and the benefits.

HAZELNUTS

A tasty tree nut, hazelnuts are largely known for their role in the beloved dessert spread, Nutella. Sweetness aside, these nuts are jam-packed of nutrients. They contain a high amount of Vitamin E, B vitamins (like Folate), and are a rich source of potassium and magnesium. They're a standout in this recipe since they add depth and a bit of earthy flavor to the doughnut!

DATES

Dates act like the eggs in the recipe. They add moist texturing to keep all the ingredients together. The best part? Dates are high in dietary fiber so they will not only taste a bit sweet, they will help get things moving!

MAPLE SYRUP

A favorite alternative sweetener among wellness enthusiasts, this sugary sap is a great stand-in for traditional, granulated sugar. Maple Syrup naturally contains magnesium, calcium, and zinc. All necessary minerals your body needs!

CACAO POWDER

The last ingredient is cacao powder. Cacao is a superfood that has myriad benefits for the body. In the case of this recipe it adds a chocolatey taste that blends well with the hazelnuts. Cacao is the highest plant-based source of Iron, and contains magnesium!

THE RECIPE

Now let's make these things!

What You Need:

The "Dough"

3/4 Cup Dates (Medjool or regular)

1/2 Cup Hazelnuts

1/3 Cup Cacao Powder

1 tsp Maple Syrup

The Frosting

1/2 Cup Dark Chocolate

1/4 Cup Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

How To Make:

  1. In a food processor, pulse the nuts until you get a coarse powder.
  2. Add the maple syrup and cacao powder and pulse again.
  3. With the motor running, feed in the dates one at a time until you get a thick, dough like ball
  4. Remove the mixture and separate the balls into ping pong ball sized pieces. Add into doughnut mold.
  5. Keep in the freezer to solidify.
  6. Remove, and in a microwave melt the ingredients for the chocolate frosting.
  7. Drizzle frosting on top
  8. Place back in the freezer
  9. After 5 minutes, remove and enjoy!
