When it comes to the sun's rays, I know about UVA, but what's UVB?

Good question! Ultraviolet Radiation B (UVB) rays are the chief cause of reddening and sunburn. They also play key roles in both tanning and skin cancer development—which is why there truly is no “safe” way to get a tan. By contrast, Ultraviolet Radiation A (UVA) rays penetrate the skin more deeply, causing wrinkles and other outward signs of photo aging. Most importantly, you’ll want to look for products that are labeled as protective against both spectra, sometimes called “broad spectrum” products.

Which SPF level is right for me?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, sold in strengths of as low as two or four (avoid these!) to 100 or greater. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that everyone wear an SPF with UVA/UVB protection of 30 or greater but a higher number doesn’t necessarily mean dramatically more protection. Studies show that SPF 50 blocks 98 percent of harmful UVB rays, while SPF 100 blocks 99 percent. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says testing might not be accurate for SPF greater than 50. If you’re unsure, stick with SPF 30 at a minimum.

How much sunscreen should I use?

Before you go out in the sun, you should apply roughly one ounce of sunscreen—about the size of a shot glass—evenly to your body and face. Reapply approximately every two hours, even on days when the sun is behind the clouds, and after swimming or sweating. Make sure to also use an SPF-enhanced lip balm and don’t ignore the thin, delicate under-eye area—it is prone to burning and sun damage can accelerate wrinkles around your eyes!
